NodeDDE
About
At the home of TimshelKnollMiller, west bank of the Maribyrnong River, Footscray.
Status
I'm currently still collecting components to get NodeDDE up and running - currently all I've got is the actual system which the wireless card will go in eventually (an old Dell Latitude CPi A400XT laptop with a broken screen). Initially I hope to get up and running in IBSS with a HomeBrew cantenna, but I hope to eventually HomeBrew an OmniAntenna and run as an AccessPoint, providing DHCP, OSPF, IPv6 and more.
Currently my home network consists of a number of NetBSD, Debian GNU/Linux woody and sid / Windoze 98 / 2000 / XP boxes, running both IPv4 and IPv6 over ethernet.
Hardware
(still gathering)
Software
NetBSD. And nothing less accepted I can't recommend it highly enough, NetBSD's networking is second to none.
LOS
- South east: Good LOS to the south-east over the Docks (not many people living in that area though
- East: Good LOS to east bank of Maribyrnong in Kensington, also LOS to west-facing high areas of North Melbourne and as far as the city
- North east: can see much of the south-west facing parts of Ascot Vale and Flemington - however a large object (the Flemington Racecource grandstand) obscures a section of this area. :-(
- North: Decent LOS as far as Essendon in this direction.
Not much else to see in other directions, minimal LOS to the south, even less to the west and north-west.
TODO
- Do more general wireless testing / playing
- Get myself an ISA -> PCMCIA adapter to use at home (I don't have any PCI2.2 compliant PC's) :-( If you've got one you want to get rid of, please contact me ...
- Finish building and test my home-brew cantennas - still need to get pigtails for my Enterasys Card. I also do the "other" sort of home brewing, so I want to test how homebrew kit cans go as cantennas ...
- Read up on and play around with various protocols, including OSPF (Zebra / Quagga) and IPSEC
- Get up on the roof and set up some kind of antenna mast. My housemate actually scored a 12M mast from somewhere, but I think it's too tall to legally use without a permit.
- Borrow a digital camera and take some photos from my roof, then post them for all to see ...
