802.11
802.11 is the original IEEE Wireless LAN specification, and now encapsulates a number of task groups which have made several advancements on the specification.
Like the now widely recognised WiFi standard (802.11b), it operates in the 2.4GHz ISM band, however it only provides 1Mbps and 2Mbps speeds (using BPSK and QPSK modulation respectively). Many cards and access points are still available "after-market" (and for very low prices), however 802.11b is more widely accepted.
The 802.11 IEEE working group encapsulates the following standards:
The 802.11 working group website is located at http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/11/.
Note that 802.11b+ is not an IEEE standard, but is also commonly being used, and is compatible with 802.11b equipment.
