"Radome [1]" is a synonym for "Radar Dome". It was originally a
dome-shaped protective housing for radar antennae. Radomes [2] aren't
just protective housings, though, they're designed to be transparent
to RF [3] radiation. In radar applications, the radome [4] was
designed to avoid spurious interference.
In microwave [5] applications, like 802.11 [6], it's common to see
yagi antennae [7] enclosed within a radome [8]. The radome [9] is used
here since water from rain or ice on the antenna's elements can cause
interference, which can vastly degrade the signal quality.
