802.11 [1] is the original IEEE [2] Wireless LAN specification, and
now encapsulates a number of task groups which have made several
advancements on the specification.
Like the now widely recognised WiFi [3] standard (802.11b [4]), it
operates in the 2.4GHz ISM [5] band, however it only provides 1Mbps
and 2Mbps speeds (using BPSK [6] and QPSK [7] modulation
respectively). Many cards and access points are still available
"after-market" (and for very low prices), however 802.11b [8] is more
widely accepted.
802.11 TASK GROUPS
The 802.11 [9] IEEE [10] working group encapsulates the following
standards managed by the various IEEE [11] 802.11 [12] task groups:
802.11a [13]
54Mbps WLAN [14] in the 5GHz ISM [15] band
802.11b [16]
11Mbps WLAN [17] in the 2.4GHz ISM [18] band
802.11c [19]
Access Point [20] bridging
802.11d [21]
Extensions to operate in additional regulatory domains
802.11e [22]
Quality of Service (QoS [23])
802.11f [24]
Inter Access Point [25] Protocol (Roaming!)
802.11g [26]
54Mbps WLAN [27] in the 2.4GHz ISM [28] band
802.11h [29]
Spectrum Managed 802.11a [30] (SMa [31])
802.11i [32]
Enhanced WLAN [33] security
Note that 802.11b+ [34] is NOT an IEEE [35] standard, but is also
commonly being used, and is compatible with 802.11b [36] equipment.
