Referring to a Shell when using computers generally means that the user is talking about accessing the computers operating system, via its interpreter.Consider a shell to be a container that provides the tools to control the Operating System .
A Shell may be:
- run in a local console (terminal) or a remote console (terminal).
- interactive (user input) or non-interactive (controlled by another program).
