Internet Protocol, version 6
There are numerous known problems with IPv4 [1], and IPv6 [2] is an
attempt to fix several of them. The most pressing problem it addresses
is the shortage of address space: because of the way that IPv4
addresses are allocated, there are not enough!
IPv6 increases the length of an address from 32 bits (v4) to 128
bits. Since every extra bit doubles the number of addresses, that
should last us a while
Because IPv6 addresses are longer, they look different. The various
formats are described on the here [3].
BTW, IPv5 was never deployed.
