Generally, the [Telnet telnet]  application is used to communicate with another computer by supplying the user with a virtual terminal. 



[Telnet Telnet's] 'days of glory' have been and gone although it still has it's uses. [SSH] is the preferred method of communicating between machines as the traffic is fully encrypted and thus has better security. 

Know [Telnet telnet's] limitations and then use it accordingly, if there is any doubt then the [SSH] application may serve you better.
