Internet Protocol, version 4.



Defined by the [IETF] in (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc791.html RFC791), this is the protocol most widely used as the basis of the [Internet].



It is normally most visible as an [IPAddress], which in version 4 has the format



  ''nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn''



where ''nnn'' is a number between 0 and 255.



IPv4 is in the process of being superceded by [IPv6], although the transition will take a very long time (like, decades).
