"[Radome]" is a synonym for "Radar Dome". It was originally a dome-shaped protective housing for radar antennae. [Radome Radomes] aren't just protective housings, though, they're designed to be transparent to [RF] radiation. In radar applications, the [Radome radome] was designed to avoid spurious interference.



In [Microwave microwave] applications, like [802.11], it's common to see [YagiAntenna yagi antennae] enclosed within a [Radome radome]. The [Radome radome] is used here since water from rain or ice on the antenna's elements can cause interference, which can vastly degrade the signal quality.
