! Introduction

MapServer is an  OpenSource development environment for building spatially enabled Internet applications.  Melbourne Wireless use MapServer to draw maps in LocFinder, as shown in the maps below.

! Rendering Issues

Currently, we have not got our maps/MapServer setup correct, there are issues with the way that maps are rendered.  In the map above, the following issues need to be addressed:

* Road names do not appear

* Rivers appear as outlines only

* Landmarks are not displayed

* City names are not displayed

Please do not add LocFinder bugs here, this section is for map rendering issues only.



! Feature Requests

* SignalPropagation coverage data to be generated by LocFinder and shown as an optional layer

* Coloured Contour Maps that look like this image:

Maps like this give you a good at-a-glance view of the "lay of the land" and will greatly assist node-owners plan potential links.  Whilst the info is not as specific as a [LocFinderCrossSections Cross-Sectional View] between two nodes, it does give a good overall idea.  It should be fairly easy to implement - as easy as putting numbers on the contour lines! {/regexpicons/emoticons/emoticon-face1.png :)}

* A simple feature that would greatly help newbies:

The ability to put in any address and see it in context on the node map - so that one can see the nodes nearest a certain address without having to actually register a node in that location.  Inputting a GPS coordinate and seeing it's map context would be also useful.

* An extension to the above point: the ability to browse the map with direction arrows (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW)

* Bring back the node search feature!  Search by suburb was very helpful to newbies.

* This has been promised as an upcoming feature before: the ability to click on a node on the map and jump to it's node entry.  Needs to implement imagemaps: there are examples of this in the MapServer tutorials. -- DONE!  Check the development website, general release coming soon. -- TysonClugg.

* If the mouse cursor is not on a node, clicking on the map should simply centre the map on that point.

* The option to navigate LocFinder with larger maps: eg. 600x600.

* The ability to turn various layers on and off as one browses.

* An option to create a "print friendly" map - a very large version of the current map view.  The resulting print friendly page would be minus all menus and browse buttons.  It would not be possible to browse the map in very large mode - so as to not hammer the server with lots of very large map requests.

Interesting. With regards to the ability to work on maps with Melways coordinates, www.street-directory.com.au could be vary useful. Looking at the source;
