Each interface will run in either BSS or IBSS mode.
BSS = Basic Service Set, aka. Access Point/Host AP mode
IBSS = Independent Basic Service Set aka. Ad-Hoc mode
BSS requires an AP to be a central point of the network where all traffic first passes through, while IBSS creates multiple p2p links where each node communicates directly with each other.
